375 MILLION Unique Seeds at Norway’s Svalbard Global Seed Vault

19 10 2012

A modern day Noah’s Ark with 375 MILLION unique seeds and human and animal DNA — Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway: Dubbed the “Doomsday Vault,” the seed bank on a remote island near the Arctic Ocean is considered the ultimate safety net for the world’s seed collections, protecting them from a wide range of threats including war, natural disasters, lack of funding or simply poor agricultural management. The vault’s location deep inside a mountain in the frozen north ensures the seeds can be stored safely no matter what happens outside. (At least Norwegian legislation makes it illegal to store and save Monsanto’s GMO seeds.)  That said, there are seed banks being built around the world now to ensure the world’s future genetic resources.
